Is it possible / worth planning to see Japan from Sapporo (Wakkanai) to Nagasaki in 14 days?

Hi all,

Of course, I'd love to see as much as possible in Japan, but that's quite not possible in 2 weeks.

Now, there's a "must do", my biggest wish ever, to climb Mt. Fuji.

Now questions:
1. Do fast trains connect whole country, even on Hokkaido island?

  1. Is it possible and worth going all the way to Wakkanai and then to Nagasaki in following schedule:

Day 1: Home - Tokyo (13 hours flight) / 29th Jul
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Fuji Climb, sleep
Day 4: Early morning, Fuji Descent, travel somewhere out of Tokyo
Day 5:
... To Plan Day 13:
Day 14: Tokyo
Day 15: Tokyo - Home (12th August)

What I'd love to see, like "must do":
- Climb Mt. Fuji - Walk through huge bamboo forest (I love bamboos)

What is I'd really love to see, but if can be done:
- See Hiroshima and Nagasaki

  1. What would you suggest to put in Days 5 - 13? :)

Hello there,

Going all the way up to Wakkanai and back down to Hiroshima is a tad ambitious for a period of 9 days. Technically you could do it but I don't think you'll have much time left how other things, expect riding the train.

A saver option would be to visit Kansai (Kyoto/Osaka) - Hiroshima - Nagasaki - Tokyo within that period of time. You could also make many great stops on the way when making this route. Such as Hakone, Himeji, Fukuoka and other places in Kyushu.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hm... OK.

Are there low cost flights within Japan available? Maybe to take a shortcut and fly to Sapporo, and then from Sapporo to Nagasaki, and then take a train all the way from Nagasaki to Tokyo?

Thanks,

Igor

Hi Igor,

Yes you can look at domestic flight. Different companies have discount flights available. Have a look at what companies provide flights between Nagasaki and Sapporo and then ask for a special foreign tourism rate or air pass. These generally can save you a good amount on normal tickets.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel-san!

Detail about "special foreign tourism rate" is very important.

Thanks a lot!

Hi,
There are no non-stop flights between Sapporo Sapporo and Nagasaki. But you can fly between Fukuoka and Sapporo on low cost carriers like Jet Star or Peach. ANA also has its Experience Japan Fare, available only for tourists.
I'd also recommend concentrating on one area of Japan and not try to blanket the country. You'll just be running around the whole time and not see much. There really is not much in Wakkanai to justify the long trip up there anyway.

If you want to walk through a bamboo forest then the most famous one is in Arashiyama, Kyoto.

Good luck!
