Hi there,

I arrive in Tokyo in Feb 2013 for 18 days. I was planning on getting a 2 week JR Pass and heading down right to the south of Japan first and then making my way back up to spend a last few days in Tokyo. I was wondering if you could give me any ideas on where is best to get off and what not. In addition, if I am leaving arriving in February when would be the best date to book my JR pass online?

You have a great site which has been very helpful.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Andy

Hi Andy,

The Japan Rail Pass can be activated in Japan any time up to 3 months from the date of purchase. This means that if you intend to travel to Japan in February, you should look into purchasing a JR Pass from the start of Dec '12.

About a route... Here's a good recommendation for your 14 day journey:

  1. Tokyo > Hiroshima: ¥17850, (295mins, 894km)
  2. Hiroshima > Miyajima-guchi: ¥400, (26mins, 21km)
  3. Miyajima-guchi > Osaka: ¥10540, (148mins, 367km)
  4. Osaka > Kinosaki-onsen: ¥5250, (161mins, 183km)
  5. Kinosaki-onsen > Kyoto: ¥4510, (156mins, 158km)
  6. Kyoto > Nara: ¥690, (44mins, 41km)
  7. Nara > Kanazawa: ¥7810, (204mins, 286km)
  8. Kanazawa > Takayama: ¥3980, (161mins, 148km)
  9. Takayama > Tokyo: ¥14000, (273mins, 532km)
  10. Tokyo > Nikko: ¥5630, (121mins, 150km)
  11. Nikko > Tokyo: ¥5630, (117mins, 150km)

JR ticket cost: ¥76290 for 11 legs

  • 14 day rail pass (¥45,100) saving: ¥31190

Note that from Osaka you can also visit many local sights, such as Himeji or Koyasan which are well worth a visit. Note that Koyasan is not 100% accessible by JR so you will need to pay an additional fee from Osaka.

Hope this helps!
