Narita airport to Sendai?

Hi,

What do you recommend is the best way of getting to Sendai station from Narita airport?

I will not be travelling around Japan, so I won't need a rail pass as I plan to go to Sendai and stay there for a few weeks.

I will be arriving quite late (around 7pm) on a Friday night.

Other websites recommend getting a train to Tokyo station and then a Shinkansen from there. Will I be able to purchase a ticket for same day travel on the Shinkansen, or will I have to reserve a ticket in advance? If I need to reserve a ticket, it says on the Shinkansen reservation website that the ticket needs to be picked up by 9pm the day before I travel, but I was hoping to go to Sendai on the same night when I arrive. Will I be able to do this?

Any help with my question will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there!

I would also suggest taking the Narita Express to Tokyo station and from there board a Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai, this is by far the fastest route. What I am concerned about is your arrival time because the last train connection like this departs at 19.46 which may or may not be too late. You could also take route 4 from this list which departs at 20:43 but you will have to make your way from Kesei Ueno to Ueno station to board the Shinkansen there. Either way it may be somewhat tricky to get to Sendai on the day of arrival. If you want to play it save, consider booking a hotel near Narita Airport or in Tokyo for your first night and than travel on the next morning to Sendai.

As for tickets, you can just buy the tickets before you depart at the station, I don't think that you have to worry about making seat reservations in advance because trains hardly sell out.
