Hey there,

I am visiting Japan for 12 days inJuly, my plan is:

Day 1- 3 Tokyo (day trip to Nikko)

Day 4-5 Kamikochi

Day 6 Kanazawa

Day 7 - 9 Kyoto

Day 10 Hakone ( or maybe extra day in Kyoto)

Day 11 -12 Tokyo

As far as I understand I will need to get some bus services so should I get 7 day pass and pay extra for few days left or get 14 day pass, which would work out the best?

Thanks for your time guys

Hi there,

That's a very nice 12 day itinerary. Matching a JR Pass to it seems a bit harder. Ideally you'd cover Nikko, Kamikochi, Kanazawa, Kyoto -Hakone/Tokyo with it but this seems a bit hard. So there are a couple of options to consider.

One is to see if you could take a late train to Hakone on day 9, this way you could use the JR Pass from day 3-9 and make the best savings. An other option would be to use it from day 4-10 and make the most savings that way. Both are possible.

For Kamikochi, the best way to travel there with a JR Pass is to take the Azusa express from Shinjuku (Tokyo) to Matsumoto and a non-JR bus from there. It's a pleasant route to travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
