Hi all!

I am leaving on Friday (4/12) for an 8 day trip to Japan. I will arrive at Narita late in the evening on 4/13.

On 4/17 I will be traveling to Miyajima from Tokyo

On 4/18 to Hiroshima and then to Kyoto

While in Kyoto we will definitely travel to Nara and back once. I would also like to take a day trip to Naoshima Island if possible.

I fly from Kansai on 4/22.

I am having trouble determining if a JR makes sense for this trip, particularly as one has to pay the limited express fees regardless. Does anyone have any insight?

All best!

Hi there!

I'm not sure where you heard the information about limited express fee, but I can assure you that holders of the JR Pass are free to travel on valid trains and bullets (all bullets except Mizuho and Nozomi class) 100% free of charge, including free seat reservations. I guess this is good news for you! :D

Because of this I can certainly recommend a 7 day pass for you starting on 16th of April until your departure on the 22nd from Kansai. Here is your cost breakdown (note that for Naoshima the JR Pass will get you to Uno where you will need to use a non-JR ferry to Naoshima island itself (around ¥300-400)):

  1. Tokyo > Miyajimaguchi: ¥18,050 (331mins, 916km)
  2. Miyajimaguchi > Hiroshima: ¥400 (26mins, 21km)
  3. Hiroshima > Kyoto: ¥10,590 (112mins, 380km)
  4. Kyoto > Nara: ¥690 (45mins, 41km)
  5. Nara > Kyoto: ¥690 (45mins, 41km)
  6. Kyoto > Uno: ¥8,580 (130mins, 252km)
  7. Uno > Kyoto: ¥8,580 (130mins, 252km)
  8. Kyoto > Kansai airport: ¥3,690 (79mins, 99km)

JR ticket cost: ¥51,270 for 8 legs

As you can see you'll make great savings with the JR Pass for your trip so I can certainly recommend it :)

Hope this helps!
