Smarter Train Route

Hi all, need help on what will be the cheapest and most efficient way to travel, 16 day trip.

Itinerary: Tokyo (mar 6 - 8) -> Kyoto + day trip to Kobe (mar 9 - 10) -> Osaka + day trip to Nara -> (mar 11 - 14) -> Kanazawa (mar 15- 16) -> Nagano (mar 17- 18) -> Tokyo (mar 19 - 21)

My initial idea was:
1. Tokyo to Kyoto: single ticket Shinkansen ¥14,440
2. Kyoto to Kobe to Kyoto, Kyoto to Nara to Osaka: Kansai Wide Area Pass ¥12,000
3. Osaka to Kanazawa to Nagano: Hokuriku Arch Pass ¥24500

  1. Is there a cheaper alternative for this
  2. Is the Hokuriki Arch Pass even worth it considering it'll only be a regular train line from Osaka to Kanazawa? Should I purchase a direct shinkansen from Osaka to Kanazawa instead?

Appreciate all the advice, thanks.

Hi there,

After looking at other alternatives, I believe the idea you suggested will work best. I suggest you purchase the Hokuriku Arch Pass before March 16th, as the price will increase after then: after March 16th the Hokuriku Shinkansen will be extended from Kanazawa to Tsuruga, but if you purchase it before this you can still use the new Shinkansen part without paying more.

Kind regards,

Alexis
