hello - i am planning the following trip for 2 (me and my son):

Dec 25 - 26: Tokyo
Dec 27: day trip to Hakone
Dec 28: travel to Shibu Onsen via Nagano
Dec 29-31: Kyoto
Dec 31: Kyoto to Osaka
Jan 1: Mt Koya day trip
Jan 2: Osaka and surrounding area
Jan 3: Osaka to Tokyo
Jan 4-5: Tokyo
Jan 5: flight home from Narita

question: does it make sense to get the 14 day pass for this 12 day itinerary, or rather just get a 7 day pass from Dec 28 - Jan 3? Also, i would like to get the green pass but want to be sure i will be able to make a reservation when i arrive on Dec 25 for the long travel days (Tokyo to Nagano Dec 28; Nagano to Kyoto Dec 29; Osaka to Mt Koya Jan. 1; and Osaka to Tokyo Jan3). Do you think on such short notice over a holiday period it will be difficult to book the green pass reservations on those dates? is it worth it to get the green pass if there is a chance i wont be able to reserve the green pass seats on those days? I am trying to understand how far in advanced these seats get booked. Any guidance you can provide on this would be so helpful. Thank you!!!

Hi there,

Yes, I think a 7-day JR Pass from Dec 28 - Jan 3 makes the most sense cost wise. For seat reservations during this period, trains do get busy, though travel is always possible. That said, Green Class may sell out ahead of time and will be packed anyway (taking away one of the main reasons to travel Green Class in the first place). So I'd just get a normal pass and enjoy a good dinner somewhere on the cost difference. That said, if you do want to go Green Class, then I think you'd be okay booking all the tickets on the 25th/26th.

Have a good trip!
Daniel
