Hi there,

I would like to ask what the best option is for me that would help me save as much money as I can while only needing to redeem 2 passes maybe 3, I have a suica and IC card from a previous Japan trip for metro and buses.

My itinerary is as follows

Asahikawa for 3 nights leave morning of 4th day
Sapporo for 3 nights leave morning of 4th day
Hirosaki for 3 nights leave morning of 4th day
Yamadera 2 nights leave morning of 3rd day
Nikko 3 nights leave morning of 4th day
Nagano 2 nights leave morning of 3rd day
Takayama 3 nights leave morning of 4th day
Kawaguchiko 2 nights leave to hike mt fuji for 2 days then return after 1 night on fuji
1 night kawaguchiko leave morning after 1 night
Tokyo 5 nights leave morning of 6th day
Kanazawa 4 nights leave morning of 5th day
Kyoto 3 nights leave evening of 4th day
tokyo 1 day before flying home

basically my trip spans a long distance but requires a few kinks to be worked out. Would it just be easiest to get one 21 day pass and activate for 21 days, have that segment in tokyo and then activate another 7 day pass for the latter end of the trip?

Let me know if you need any more details?!!

Hello Ollie,

It's a really nice trip! Hokkaido and especially Hohoku are great off-the-beaten-track locations. I looked at different options but have to say it is hard to match a JR Pass to your plans. This is mainly due to timing and spending longer periods in each location. I think the best value would be in using a JR Pass from the day that you are departing from Sapporo to Hirosaki.

Are your days firm? If you have flexibility consider staying in Tokyo for the last part of your trip. This way you could use the above mentioned 14-day JR Pass to get some extra travel for example to Kanazawa or Kyoto.

But yes, you are right that would generally does not make sense to use a pass if you are locally in Tokyo.

Kind regards,
Daniel
