Hi, travelling to Japan for 18 days and I'm trying to determine whether I'll need the 14 or 21 day rail pass

The itinerary below:

5 nights in Tokyo
3 nights in Nagano
1 nights in Hakone
5 nights in Kyoto
3 nights in Hiroshima
1 night in Osaka

We'll also be doing some day trips as well like to Nara and Nikko and potentially one or two more but that's not confirmed yet. So i just wanted to see which pass would be the best and if we would need to get the IC card as well

Hi there,

I think you'll likely be fine with a 14-day Japan Rail Pass, if you start using it from the day that you plan to go to Nagano. Travel within Tokyo itself is relatively low cost, and can also involve non-JR transport like the Metro. An IC card can certainly be handy here!

Hope this helps,
Daniel
