We're spending 17 days in Japan and traveling around by rail. We're spending a week in Tokyo, 2 days in Nagano, 5 days in Kyoto and a couple of days in Osaka. We want to do some day trips from Tokyo and Kyoto. Are we best off purchasing the 21 day rail pass? Will this allow us to travel on the trains we need?

Also, any 'must see' attractions you could suggest for us traveling with a 2.5 year old and a 7 month old...?

We're leaving in 9 days...

Thank you!

Just to clarify, we're flying into Haneda, and leaving from Osaka.

Thanks again.

Hello there,

The amount of rail travel is not as much as you may see in other itineraries here on the forum. Looking at ticket prices too, you'll most likely be not cover the price of a JR Pass. Possibly a 7 day JR Pass could be great if you use itt for travel from Tokyo - Nagano - Kyoto and make a day trip or two. For instance to Nikko, Himeji or Hiroshima. These are all amazing visits and well worth considering for any trip to Japan.

As for great visits with children. The Tokyo Disney resort comes to mind, as well as Universal Studios in Osaka / Harry Potter world.

In Kyoto Fushimi Inara is cool to visit with kids, the endless Tori gates feel like an endless maze.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
