Hello all,

I need your advice on the different types of transportation cards that you can get in Japan.

We will arrive at Narita airport on March 30 and will stay in Japan until April 10. We plan to visit Osaka and Kyoto in addition to Tokyo. We also want to visit more distant places in Tokyo such as Fuji and Disneysea. Do I only need JR lines in Tokyo? Because you can use that if you have Japan Rail Pass, I assume. Is JR lines only sufficient enough for Tokyo?

I wonder if I can take advantage of only Japan Rail Pass. Of course we want the Shinkansen trains to Osaka and Kyoto, but first we want to spend 3-5 days in Tokyo.

Would it be convenient to use the Tokyo subway Ticket for the first 1-2 days only in the center of Tokyo and only then get a 7 day Japan Rail Pass?

Thank you for your help!

Hi there,

The JR Pass covers indeed all the local JR lines around Tokyo, where this is enough depends on where you want to go within the city. Same goes for a subway ticket.

That said, a 7-day JR Pass will help you make savings going to Osaka/Kyoto and back to Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for your reply!

So Japan Rail Pass and the JR lines is sufficient enought in the cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto?

Would it be more convenient to first buy a 3-day subway card to go to Tokyo from Narita and the next two days in Tokyo and then activate the Japan Rail Pass to travel to Osaka and Kyoto? Can I go from Narita to Tokyo with a subway card?

Hi,

Think of it this way, the JR Pass will certainly help you make savings on this trip. Yet you still may need local transport within cities, this entirely depends on where you want to go, so I can't say for sure without knowing your full plan.

The Tokyo subway does not go to Narita Airport.

Kind regards,
Daniel
