I need to get from Haneda - Kyoto. I arrive to Haneda Airport at 9:40pm on Dec. 14 - what do you recommend routing wise & how to purchase our train tickets:
Dec. 14: Haneda - Yohohama, overnight
Dec. 15: Yohohama - Kyoto
Dec. 15: evening Koyoto - Kobe ; (just going for dinner); Kobe - Koyoto
Dec. 17: Koyoto back to Haneda

A recommend using a 7 day Japan Rail Pass, the cost of a pass is very similar to the cost of a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto. Adding travel to other cities, like Kobe and back to Haneda Airport will only add to that.
I think it's a great idea that you stay in Yokohama the first night, this way you are all set up to travel on the following day.
