Hi! Would appreciate advice on the best way to plan with JR Passes for a group of 8 adults and 4 children travelling together for 10 days from June 6 to 16. Arriving Narita, hoping to cover Mt Fuji, Nagano and Tokyo.

Hi there,

Here is an example itinerary you could use. For this I assumed that you would use a 7-Day JRPass.
Day 1 - Arrival in Narita --> Travel on Tokyo.

Day 2- Tokyo

Day 3- Day trip from Tokyo to Fuji

Day 4- travel to Nagano, First day of JR-Pass use.

Day 5- Stay in Nagano

Day 6- Travel on the Kyoto early.

Day 7- Kyoto

Day 8- Kyoto (maybe day trip to Osaka or Nara)/ Alternatively back to Tokyo.

Day 9- Back to Tokyo (day for shopping and souvenirs)

Day 10- Tokyo --> Travel to Narita --> Flight home (last day of JR-Pass use).

This way you can relax in Tokyo the first day you are there and recover from Any Jet Lag. When you arrive I would recommend using [Sky liner + 2Day Open Metro Pass] to get to Tokyo and with the Metro Pass you can move freely around in Tokyo for the first 2 days.

Fuji-san can easily be reached by Highway Bus from Shinjuku in Tokyo.
The advantage here is that you won't have to carry all your luggage around.

After that the JR-Pass will cover all your travel, including the way back to Narita Airport.

Since you travel with a group of 12, I would recommend exchanging your JR-Pass the first day when you are in Tokyo, the best thing here is that you can make seat reservations already for the days that you will travel. This way you are sure you have seats together.

Instead of making a day trip on day 8, you could also go back to Tokyo and maybe visit Disney Land on day 9.

Hope this helps!

Thanks very much for the info.

Day 4 to 8 we wish to concentrate on visiting Nagano region, not Kyoto/Osaka/Nara. Any additional recommendation?

Hi there,

You can easily swap around Nagano and Kyoto, so no problems there.
In general I don't have much to add. I can however comment on specific concerns/questions, if you have any.
Just out of curiosity what are your plans in Nagano? You could easily see the city and main attractions in a day or two.

Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Thanks very much, Daniel-san. You've given us a basic idea of how to plan our itinerary. As for plans in Nagano, my companions want to spend time in the alps.
