Hi!
My family (2 adults and 1 child) will go to Hiroshima from Otsuka station after quarantine period on October 24. I already bought 2 shinkansen ticket coupon and 1 child's ticket (non-reserved) and will send the tickets by post mail.
They will bring:
3 suitcase L size (150-155cm)
1 suitcase M size (140cm)
1 suitcase S size (105cm)
1 guitar case (172cm)
2 regular back pack

my questions are:
1. can they reserve for seats and luggage at Otsuka station on the departure day? (Including child's ticket)
2. Are all the luggage allowed to bring together with the passengers?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

The official rules for luggage on the train in Japan are: You may bring up to two pieces of baggage on board free of charge. For each bag the total of the length, width and height must not exceed 250 centimeters, the length must not exceed two meters and the weight must be no more than 30 kilograms..

While this is the rule, it generally is not enforced or even check (as when flying). The rule is more in place to trains still have space during busy days, these days however trains are not anywhere near full and I do not expect that this will be a problem. In case that there is a charge for luggage, then it would be small and cost about 1.000yen per additional suitcase.

Seats can be reserved at any JR Station, including Otsuki.

I hope you find this useful,
Daniel
