We are a family of four (2 adults + 2 children 13yrs and 15 yrs) traveling to Japan between Jun 7 to Jun 15. We are arriving in Tokyo on Jun 7. We plan to leave for Kyoto on June 12 (or 13th) and return directly to Tokyo (Narita) from Kyoto to catch our return flights on June 15. I was wondering if we should be purchasing JR Passes for local travel in the cities, Narita express etc. as well as Shinkansen travel for 4 between Tokyo and Kyoto, or should we be just using a Suica/Pasmo card for local travel and purchasing the shinkansen ticket separately once we arrive in Japan.

Thank You

Hi there,

Yes, a 7 day JR Pass is worth it when you make a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto. The cost of a 7-day JR Pass is similar to a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto, now you get unlimited travel for these 7-days at the same price and any additional travel (e.g. Narita Express) will add up nicely in terms of savings.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
