Hi there,

The SUICA (or other prepaid cards) serve a different purpose to a JR Pass. I’d recommend purchasing a JR Pass only if you’ll be moving around and visiting several places for short periods of time, and if you’ll be using the Shinkansen trains a fair amount. A SUICA card will be useful for local transport, e.g. metro and bus travel in cities, and remaining credit can be spent on coffee shops, the airport etc.

Kind regards,

Alexis
