We're planning our trip to Japan in April 2014.
We're wondering if we need to buy a JR pass for 14 or 21 days or we better buy single tickets for our itinerary?

1) Tokyo 4 days
2) Mt. Fuji 2 days
3) Kyoto 6 days
4) Osaka 2 days
5) Miyajima 2 days
6) Fukuoka 4 days

We want to book a Hotel in Fukuoka, and visit the following places from here:
* Kawachi Fuji Gardens 1/2 day * Yufuin Onsen 1 day * Shimonoseki 1/2 day * Mt. Aso 1 day * Yamaguchi 1 day

We're also worrying whether our stay in Fukuoka is too short?
Or we should stay somewhere else to easy to acces these places?

Thanks!

Hi there!

Traveling around Tokyo and to Mt. Fuji generally is not very expansive, I would recommend to start using your JR Pass when you travel to Kyoto. Your trips from there are all great picks and the JR Pass covers travel to all of them. I think that you would be fine with a 14 day JR Pass but it would depend on what you will do after Fukuoka.

As spending 4 days around Hakata, I do think that time will be a little short of your the day trips that you will be making, in addition Fukuoka and the area around there are also great (for instance a visit to Dazaifu so I would recommend staying a little longer, 6 days would be really nice.

I hope this helps and have a great time in Japan!

Hi Daniel - san,

Thanks a lot!
From Fukuoka, we'll fly back home. But after your advice we might stay longer in Fukuoka and skip 1 day in Kyoto or Tokyo.
Would you recommend, Onsen in Mt. Fuji or in Yufuin?
Do you know how we can get to Kawachi Fujij Gardens easily?

Thanks again!
Really looking forward to this trip!

Hi Again!

Both Mt. Fuji or in Yufuin have very beautiful onsen, Yufuin is a real onsen town and the train ride there is also especially scenic, so I would recommend visiting there.

I have not visited the Kawachi Fuji Garden myself but apperntly the best way to get there is to take the train to Yahata Station and board a free shuttle bus service from there or take a taxi. You can read more about that here.

Looks like a very nice trip indeed!
