Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto

Dear Team Explore Japan!
My two teenagers (19) will be traveling to Japan from Washington DC to visit high school friends in Kyoto.
It seems to make financial sense to have them fly into Tokyo, and take train to Kyoto.
Can they catch the Shinkansen from Narita or Haneda airport?

If they have to overnight in Tokyo before catching the Shinkansen, are there airport hotels with shuttles from the airport? They do NOT speak Japanese unfortunately and I would like to avoid a lot of train transfers especially after such a long flight.

Thank you for any advice.

Hi there,

There are indeed different hotels that offer a direct shuttle service between the Airport and different Hotels. An example is the Hilton. The Shinkansen depart from Tokyo station and go directly to Kyoto, it does mean that they'll first have to travel to Tokyo station, not to worry though, most bigger stations have an English tourist information which can guide you around.

There's always the option of a taxi if you want to avoid transfers all together.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
