traveling in Japan on January 1

I will be waking up in Nagoya on January 1, and then need to travel to Narita to catch my flight back to the US, which leaves at 5:15 pm. What are the train schedules like on New Year's Day? Should I make an advanced reservation? How do I do that? (I will have a Green Pass, partly because I have been told that the trains are full New Year's week).
Thanks for any advice!

Hi there!

Train departures on January 1st are the same as any other day in Japan. You can check train times using Hyperdia. I would certainly recommend making seat reservations in advance, many Japanese visit family around new year and trains can get busy quickly.

To make seat reservations, go to any JR Station and show your JR Pass. At this point just tell the staff when and where you wish to travel - they will then print the tickets for you!

I hope this helps!
Daniel
