We are 4 persons planning a trip to Japan.
From Narita in the morning we have planned to take a car for five days of travel before we enter Tokyo, just to leave the town with a japanese friend who are taking us to mount Fuji for 3 days.
Then we return to Tokyo, but want to go to Kyoto by train, stay there for 5 days, where we are also taking trips out of the city. Once again back to Tokyo, where we have 4 days before we are going home.
It is a fixed program, because we have some arrangements on certain dates, but I wonder what kind of rail passes would be good for us and should we also buy some kind of passes for transportation in Kyoto and Tokyo?
We have thought of going to Mashiko and Nikko by car, would there be some other interesting spots to go to in this region, or how could we spend the first 5 days by car in the best way?
Hope it is not so confusing to you as it seems to me!
Very happy I found this place to ask.
Yours
Kimi

Hi Kimi,

I think that a 7 day JR Pass would work out great for the period that you travel from Tokyo - Kyoto and back again. This way you have your return covered and also don't have to worry about making day trips to places such as Nara and Osaka.

Mashiko and Nikko are both located in Tochigi-prefecture, which is one of the most beautiful prefectures in Japan you could also visit Yumoto there which is home to a beautiful waterfall and forest area.

I think that you looking pretty good for the rest!
-Daniel
