Hi there

I'm taking my family to Japan in the spring and i'm not sure which Japan Rail Pass to get. Are there many different types? We intend to go: Tokyo - Kyoto - Nara - Osaka - Hiroshima (inc. the Miyajima ferry).

Thanks

Hi there,

Although JR Passes do exist for certain JR zones, the only pass that will cover the areas you list is the nationwide Japan Rail Pass which is available in 7, 14 and 21 day versions. Assuming you'l arrive and depart from Narita Airport in Tokyo here is your cost breakdown for comparison of rail pass against purchasing standard JR tickets:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3,140 (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13,420 (164mins, 513km)
  3. Kyoto > Nara: ¥690 (44mins, 41km)
  4. Nara > Osaka: ¥780 (55mins, 48km)
  5. Osaka > Hiroshima: ¥10,150 (104mins, 345km)
  6. Hiroshima > Miyajimaguchi: ¥400 (26mins, 21km)
  7. Miyajimaguchi > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥20,340 (408mins, 995km)

JR ticket cost: ¥48,920 for 7 legs

Here are the savings you'd make on this travel with the various JR Pass sizes:

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!
