Hello, We are a party of 2, travelling through Japan for 6 weeks, beginning March 18/24. We will have private Transportation to & from the Airport. Is it worth getting a JR pass for the following? Tokyo to Hakone to Kyoto to Koyosan to Osaka to Takayama to Matsumoto to Tokyo? Thanks in advance, Laura

Hi Laura,

Since your visit exceeds 21 days, you'd have to get two passes each to cover the entire duration of your trip. Also note that to access some places like Hakone, you'd require an additional rail pass such as the Hakone FreePass, or you would have to just purchase a regular rail ticket instead.

If your goal is to save as much money as possible no matter what, purchasing the JRPass may not be your best option.

However, if you wouldn't mind spending a bit more on a JRPass and/or other regional passes, it may come in handy. Firstly, it may make planning your transport routes a lot easier when travelling to and from most of the locations in your itinerary. As well as this, having a JRPass grants you freedom to include minor visits that weren't necessary planned in your original itinerary - for example, you may be recommended to visit an area by a local. Remember, having the JRPass lets you reserve train seats at a short notice, meaning you don't have to worry about buying and reserving tickets beforehand.

Also note that you always have the option of purchasing a 7-day or 14-day pass as well. For example, during your visit to Tokyo, a JRPass or other regional pass would let you freely explore the city and the surrounding area.

For your particular itinerary, we would usually recommend purchasing the JRPass, perhaps in combination with other regional passes. However, because the length of your visit is 6 weeks, the decision relies more on your personal priorities.

Hope this helps! Please don't hesitate to ask any further question if you wish.
