Good morning, we are a family of three travelling in Japan this summer as follows:
Tokyo > Matsumoto > Gotemba (for Mt. Fuji climb) > Kyoto > Osaka (with possible day trip to Nara) > Koyasan > Hiroshima > Miyajima > Tokyo (and possible day trip to Nikko or seaside place near Tokyo).

We are in the country for a total of 21 days, please can you let me know what you think is the most cost effective way to travel by train in terms of JR pass or other combination.

Also, part of our stay coincides with Obon week in August - will we still be able to reserve seats for our train journeys if we are to arrive in Tokyo at the end of July?

Thanks and happy Easter break! priya

Hi there,

For your itinerary it is likely to be more cost-effective to purchase your tickets individually. However, the JR Pass will cover all of your itinerary and so it is still an option worth looking into if you feel that a pass is better suited for you.

You should be fine booking tickets with reserved seats as long as you are organised - if you want, you can make those reservations in advance when you land to ensure you find a seat.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Alexis. Do you advise on any regional JR passes? I shall investigate individual tickets and weigh up easiest and cost effective way forward. Thanks for your help.
