Our family from Australia, with 4 adults and 2 kids (one 4 years and the other 10 months old) have the following itinerary. Haven't booked trains or hotels yet.
20/04/24 to 24/04/24 Visiting family in Nobeoka, Miyazaki, Fukuoka
24/04/24 Fukuoka to Hiroshima (overnight Miyajima island)
25/04/24 Hiroshima to Himeji (Castle) and to Osaka
26/04/24 Round trip to Nara
27/04/24 Osaka city, Dontonbori, Osaka Castle (3 nights in Osaka)
28/04/24 Osaka to Kyoto -Fushimi Inari, Gion district
29/04/24 Kyoto- Golden Pavilion, Arashiyama bamboo grove
30/04/24 Kyoto-Kiyomizu-dera, Higashiyama district, Kawaramachi shopping (3 nights in Kyoto)
01/05/24 Kyoto to Tokyo Disneyland (1 night)
02/05/24 Disneyland, afternoon train to a hotel in Tokyo, ?near Tokyo train station, Tokyo city tour
03/05/24 Tokyo city -sight seeing
04/05/24 Day trip to Mt Fuji & Hakone
05/05/24 Tokyo city-sight seeing
06/05/24 Day trip to Lake Kawaguchiko
07/05/24 Tokyo city
08/05/24 Day trip Kamakura
09/05/24 Tokyo city
10/05/24 Flying out from Narita airport

  1. Does this itinerary include too many places considering we are travelling with kids?
  2. I think JR pass for 1 week from 25/04 to 01/05 may not be cost effective for us? Please advise
  3. Any advise about travelling with luggage and kids in trains

Thanks in advance
Sue

Hi there,

Your itinerary seems fine for travelling with kids - while it may cost you more, I always recommend looking at either an upgraded Green-class JR Pass or just Green-class tickets for those travelling with kids. The carriages are always less crowded and a lot more quiet.

Trains do let you take on a certain amount of luggage on board, but when purchasing tickets/making seat reservations you may need to add on additional space for luggage. If you measure the dimensions of your luggage you can check with the JR employee if you’ll need to book for whatever purchases/reservations you make.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
