Hello. We're traveling in late August. We start in Tokyo for a day or two, then off to Hakone. Getting to Hakone we've got sorted out - get to Shinjuku station, and then use the Hakone free pass + the surcharge to take the Romancecar to Hakone-Yumoto
We plan to put a 7 day JRPass, and have it activate on the 19th of august - the day we leave Hakone.
From Odawara, we'd like to take a bullet train to Kyoto station - it looks like the Shinkansen Hikari is out best bet.
Our hotel in Kyoto is quite near Kyoto station.
August 19 - travel from Hakone to Kyoto, spend afternoon exploring the palace - Shinkansen Hikari
August 20 - day trip to Nara - Nara Line
August 21 - Fushime Inari Shrine -Nara Line, exit at inari station
August 22 - day trip to Himej castle - ShinKansen Hikari - exit at Himeji station
August 23 - day trip to Rabbit island (Okunoshima) - Shinkansen Hikari to Okayama, ShinKansen Kodama to Mihara, Kure line to Tadanoumi, Ferry from Tadanoumi to island
August 24 - Arashiyama Bamboo forest in Kyoto. San-in line to Saga Arashiyama station
August 25 - return to Tokyo from Kyoto. Shinkansen hikar to Tokyo station, JR Yamanote Line to Akihabara station.
Once we're back in Tokyo, and checked into the hotel, we'll finish up the JR pass by heading back to Tokyo station in the afternoon to go explore the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then back to the hotel. The rest of our time in Tokyo (4 days), we'll probably just use the regular metro lines. (such as the trips to The Dance Festival on the 26th & out to Studio Ghibli Museum on the 27th) Most of the last couple of days will be spent shopping in Akihabara itself
I think we're doing our best to maximize our use of the 7 day JR pass in this way (There are 4 of us - me, my wife, and my 10 and 13 year old daughters)
I'd like you opinion on this, and if you think it's worth upgrading to the Green Car. If I've messed anything up, please let me know. It's been very inspiring reading the posts in this forum.
