My family (wife, 11‐month‐old son, and I) will be in Japan from April 16–29, 2025, and we plan to travel by train between these cities:
Osaka (April 16–19)
Kyoto (April 19–21)
Fujiyoshida (April 21–23)
Tokyo (April 23–24)
Aomori (April 24–26)
Tokyo (April 26–29)

We'll be traveling with a stroller and a large trolley bag. Do you think a JR Pass is cost-effective for this itinerary? Any tips on reserved seating or traveling with bulky luggage would be appreciated.

Hello there,

Yes, a 7-day JR Pass is worth considering for the part: Kyoto - Fujiyoshida - Tokyo - Aomori - Tokyo. The best advice here I can give you is plan ahead for Kyoto to Fujiyoshida, this is a long trip that involves different types of transport and transfers. Especially with a young child and extra luggage this could be bothersome. If you're looking for a more accessible alternative, that is at least as good, consider a visit to Hakone instead. Which too has amazing views of Fuji.

Once you are in Japan, you can request seats that are in front of each train car. These have extra luggage allowance.

Kind regards,
Daniel
