Hi Daniel San,

We are two couples travelling to Japan first time in the first week of April from 3rd April to 16th April. Our Itinerary is as follows:

Day 1 Tokyo
Day 2 Nikko (Day Trip)
Day 3 Mt. Fuji (Lake Kawaguchiko)
Day 4 Mt. Fuji + Kyoto
Day 5 Kyoto
Day 6 Kyoto
Day 7 Nara (Night in Osaka)
Day 8 Osaka (Night in Osaka)
Day 9 Himeji, Kanazawa (Night in Kanazawa)
Day 10 Kanazawa (Night in Kanazawa)
Day 11 Takayama (Night in Takayama)
Day 12 Takayama / Shirakawago (Night in Toyama)
Day 13 Japan Alps (Night in Matsumoto)
Day 14 Tokyo

Can you please let us know if our itinerary is doable? We know it is a bit of travelling but we are used to it. Also can you please let us know if 14 day JR pass will be worth the money for our travel? If you have any other tips apart from this please do let us know.

Thank you for your help :)

Hi there,

I think the trip is well doable if you don't mind traveling a couple hours on a daily basis and I must say that travel in general in Japan is a pleasant experience.

The one route I would prepare in advance is going from Kawaguchiko to Kyoto. There is not one easy route between both places. You either take a bus from Kawaguchiko to Mishima and the Shinkansen from there to Kyoto or you return to Tokyo by rail and take the Shinkansen from there. To complicate matters, neither the bus nor the first part by rail from Kawaguchiko are included in the JR Pass. In general I advice travelers to do Kawaguchiko as a day trip from Tokyo and then travel on the following day to Kyoto.

Also the route from Takayama to Matsumoto is quite long but very scenic. It takes about 5 hours. As long as this is not a problem for you, I would go for it. Otherwise a visit to Nagano could be a nice alternative.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
