Hi,

I'm planning to visit Japan for 16 nights in November and I am wondering when it would be best to activate my JR 14 days Pass for my trip.

I will be arriving in Tokyo on Friday November 3rd in the morning. Is it better to activate my pass as soon as I arrive? Or wait a few days before I do because it's more useful at the end of my trip? Maybe activate it on the 6th instead?

My itinerary is as follows

Friday 3/11 Arrive in Tokyo, Explore Tokyo Station area and Shibuya
Saturday 4/11 Ueno Park, Ameyayokocho street, Senso-ji Temple, Akihabara
Sunday 5/11 Tokyo Metropolitan Building, Meiji Shrine, Shinjuku, Happy Pancakes
Monday 6/11 Imperial Palace and East Gardens, Shopping, Ninja Restaurant, Mario Go-Kart
Tuesday 7/11 Leave Tokyo - Go to Hakone
Wednesday 8/11 Leave Hakone - Got o Mount Fuji
Thursday 9/11 Leave Mount Fuji - Go back to Tokyo, Tokyo Shopping + Food + Capsule Experience
Friday 10/11 Leave Tokyo/Arrive in Kyoto - Kiyomizu-dera, ninenzaka and sannenzaka, Yasaka shrine, Maruyama Park, Gion, Kichi Kichi omurice
Saturday 11/11 Arashiyama bamboo forest, Sagano Romantic Train, Kinkakuji Temple
Sunday 12/11 Fushimi Inari Taisha, Nishiki Market, Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, Kyoto Station at Night
Monday 13/11 Day Trip to Nara
Tuesday 14/11 Leave Kyoto - Arrive in Osaka, Shitennoji Temple, Shinsekai
Wednesday 15/11 Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi/Ebisubashi, Uncle Rikuro's Cheesecake, Zauo's Fishing Restaurant
Thursday 16/11 Universal Studios
Friday 17/11 Horishima Day Trip

Hi there,

You will get the best value out of the pass when used for longer trips, think of travel to Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. With that in mind, I do think it makes sense to wait with activation until you depart from Tokyo.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel. With that being said, I would need to buy a separate ticket for Narita Airport to Tokyo when I arrive. Will I still need a JR Pass to cover the first 4 days tickets? Or will individual tickets be sufficient?
