Hello Daniel-San!

I will be traveling to Japan in middle May of this year. It will be 4 weeks trip, and I have the idea to go to different places.
The itinerary would look something like this:

Tokyo - Day 1 to Day 6. Most comon places in the city and day trips to Nikko, Yokohama, Kanagawa.
Kawaguchi Lake - Day 7
Takayama - Day 8
Shiragawa-go - Day trip
Kanazawa - Day 9
Kyoto - Day 10 to Day 14. Most comon places in the city
Osaka - Day 14 to Day Day 19. Most comon places in the city and day trip to Nara and Kobe.
Hiroshima - Day 20
Miyajima - Day 21
Fukuoka - Day 22 to Day 23. Day trip to Hita and then Oita
*Beppu to Osaka in Ferry. Overnight Osaka to Nagoya - Day 25
Nagoda - Day 26
Hakone - Day 27 - Day 28
Tokyo - Day 28 - Day 30

  1. Taking into account this route, would you recomend to buy the JR pass or regular tickets?
  2. If I buy the JR Pass, I will buy the 14 day trip. Do you think will be enough? since I'm thinking to use the regular tickets for the other days.
  3. If you recomend the JR Pass, which places within this itinerary, would you suggest will be better for?

I'm open for any other suggestion.

Thank you!

Hi there,

1&2.) You do a lot of travel, and the only pass that really would make sense is a 21-day JR Pass (when looking at your timing) and would cover nearly all your travels. Have you considered taking the train back to Osaka instead of the ferry, for even more savings? Be sure to include trips to Nikko, for the best savings.

3.) Sorry, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking here.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you for your answers Daniel- san. I was planning to take the ferry to Osaka, to have a different experience but also because I was thinking to get the 14 day JR pass only, starting on my travel day from Kyoto to Osaka, and it will not work anymore by the day I planing to return from Beppu or Fukuoka to Osaka.
Sorry If the question was not clear. What I meant is, now that you consider to take the 21 day JR Pass instead. I would like to know, which day would you recomend to start using it?, since of course it will not covered the whole trip.
Thanks!

For the best date / optimization.

I'd switch Nikko to day 7, start using the pass on that day and make use of it until you reach Hakone.

There are different budget options (such as local train, bus) from Hakone to Tokyo to save on money.
