March 2017 itinerary

Hello!

We are visiting Japan for the first time for 14 nights from 7th March 2017. We wanted to make sure we didn't have a hugely rushed itinerary as we will have just been backpacking for 2 months, but we wanted to see the key cities plus get a few days skiing in. What do you think of the following itinerary?

-Arrive 7th: Tokyo -8th: Tokyo -9th-12th: Kyoto (plus day trip to Nara) -13th-14th: Osaka -15th-16th: Skiing at Gala Yuzawa resort -17th-20th: Tokyo

We have decided to do most time in Tokyo at the end so we avoid skiing at the weekend as we read that this particular resort could be very busy then. We also wondered if this route would be best for utilising the JR Pass and which one we should get? We are also aware we will likely just miss the first cherry blossom bloom, what a shame!

Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks!

Hello there,

I think it does make sense to avoid the Skiing during the weekend. You could have fun in Tokyo during the weekend, such as checking our Harajuku on Sunday. The rest of the itinerary looks fun too.

For the route, you can use the JR Pass on the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo - Kyoto. There is also a Shinkansen line to Yuzawa. These are all included in the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks very much for your response. Which JR Pass would you recommend getting for this trip?

Hi again,

For the JR Pass, you could use a 7 day JR Pass for travel to Kyoto, Nara and Osaka. A 14 day JR Pass would require a little more travel travel to pay off but the difference is small. For instance, adding a day trip from Tokyo - Nikko would more than pay for this.

Hi Daniel,

OK great, we will likely buy the 14 day JR Pass and incorporate a day trip from Tokyo to Nikko or Hakone to make sure we get our money's worth.

Thanks for your advice on the trip!

Lauren

Hi Lauren,

Good choice! Personally, I love Nikko and it is a great visit all year round. Hakone will be great too in March.
