Nagoya > Takayama > Kanazawa > Shirakawa. Worth it?

Hi. I'm planning on taking the route mentioned above. Will be taking in Hida and Gero along the way too. How much of this will be covered by JR rail, JR buses or neither?

A potential issue is that the last leg, from Takayama back to Nagoya, will happen on day 8 and so won't be covered by the 7 day JR pass. Is it still worth buying or would it be cheaper to do the above route by buying individual rail / bus tickets?

Thanks.

Hello there,

All train travel is covered in your itinerary, only travel by bus from either Kanazawa or Takayama is not included by the JR Pass, as this bus is operated by an other company.

For this trip, it will be cheaper to buy normal tickets than a pass. You can find our the exact numbers with our fare calculator www.jrpass.com/compare

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks so much for this info Daniel, it's very helpful. I was in a travel agent the other day and they have a 5 day JR pass that just covers the region I'm travelling in. I think it was 14k JPY so it seems like the best option might be to use that for the first 5 days and then buy additional tickets for the last couple of days as needed. Seems better value than individual tickets all the way... I think.
