Should I buy a 7-day or 14-day pass?

I am travelling to Japan with my daughter arriving at Narita Airport on June 30 (1 pm) and departing on July 10 (10:30 pm). The first idea is to spend:
Tokyo (3 nights)
Nikko (day trip)
Hakone (1 night)
Kyoto (3 nights)
Nara (day trip)
Osaka (1 night)
Tokyo (2 nights)

Any suggestions? Is it worth to buy a 7-day pass for this trip? What to buy for our trips inside big cities?
Thanks for your help.

Hi there,

That's a wonderful trip, with many of the best highlights has to offer!

In terms of a JR Pass, you will break about even using a 7-day JR Pass. Assuming you use the Shinkansen to Nikko, Hakone and also return to Tokyo before the pass expires. The Pass does cover local JR Lines as well, and depending on your daily schedule, there are some savings that can be made.

For others, I recommend using a Hakone Free Pass if you plan on doing the full Hakone Circle.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank your for your promptly reply. However, I am still a little confused. If I buy a 7-day pass, I would activate it before going to Nikko and it would expire before going back to Narita, right? Thus, going to the hotel and coming back to the airport and possible some trips in Tokyo would not be covered. If I buy a 14-day pass, would I have peace of mind paying just a little more or not? Thanks again.
Heitor
