Hi there,

Later this month I am travelling to Japan for a sightseeing and skiing holiday. We are in Japan for 15 days total. We fly into Tokyo and stay for two nights, then travel to NozawaOnsen for skiing for 6 nights. Then we are travelling to Kyoto where we stay for 3 nights, then back to Tokyo for another 3 nights. There are two adults and three children. Unfortunately two of the children will be 12 years old (just) the other one is 5 years old. I am not sure if the JR pass would be worthwhile. What do you think? What is the best way to travel from NozawaOnsen to Kypoto? Can you use the JR pass for bus services in addition to the train?

Many thanks for your advice.

Hi there,

Let's have a look at ticket prices:

Nozawa - Kyoto ¥ 11,970
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 14,110

For a total of ¥ 26,080, the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110 and thus costs a little more. A JR Pass could still be worth it if you do a little more travel with it, even one way to Narita Airport using the JR Pass on the Narita Express would break you even.

For child passes see:

Local JR buses are covered, however buses operated by other companies are not.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you so much for your advice.

So you are suggesting we just buy tickets for the Tokyo-NozawaOnsen trip, and then when we finish skiing use a one week pass for the remainder of our trip. That seems like a good idea.

Iiyama is the nearest Shinkansen station to NozawaOnsen. It looks like a quite a small town. Will I be able to exchange my exchange order for a pass at the station there?

Many thanks again.

I just have that one further question...
Will it be possible to collect the pass close to NozawaOnsen before we take the train to Kyoto?

Don't worry I've figured out the answer! When you exchange the order for the pass you can decide when you want to start using the pass, you don't need to start using it straight away,
Many thanks
