My son is going to Japan for 19 daysat the end of May and was wondering if he should get a full 21 day Rail pass for travel over the whole of Japan or whether he should just get the West Japan pass plus pay extra for the trip to Tokyo and back or is there any other alternative/combination?
His itinerary is:
Arrive Kansai airport and stay in Osaka for 2 days
Travel to Okayama to get ferry to Naoshima Island for a stay of 2 days
Travel from Noashima to Miyazu and stay for 4 days
Travel from Miyazu to Kyoto and stay 3 days
Travel from Kyoto to Koyasan for 1 day
Travel from Koyasan to Tokyo and stay 5 days
Travel back from Tokyo to Osaka 1 day
Travel from Osaka to Kansai Airport on last day.
Hope someone can help with some advice - thank you.
Which Rail Pass is best
Hi there,
I don't think that a 21-day JR Pass is the most economic option for this plan.
What I would do is buy Kansai wide pass for your travel to Okayama and back and than use a 7-day JR Pass for the return to Tokyo. This way you will have all your long distance travel covered and make some great savings on the way.
You can than buy supplement the rest buy buying local tickets to Koyasan and Kansai Airport. You can use the 980 yen ticket from Kansai airport to reach Osaka.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
