Hi. travelling to japan for first time and looking at 21 days. Do we need to get a 21 day national pass or can we get example 3 x 7 days regional passes for each areas are we travel from bottom of japan to top.

Hi there,
Each pass is counted in consecutive days, in other words, they count down from the first day of use.
You can of course also buy different regional passes, or combine them with the JR Pass. The only rule to think about is that their validity days can't overlap.
