Hello! It's my family's first time in Japan and would like to consult on the best JR pass to use for our trip. Not sure if Japan national rail pass is the best choice. I'd like to share our itinerary below:

Day 1: Narita Express from Narita to Shin-Osaka, stay at Osaka
Day 2: Day trip to Kyoto
Day 3: Transfer from Osaka to Tokyo
Day 4-7: Stay in and sightseeing around Tokyo
Day 8-Narita Express, from Tokyo to Narita Airport

Given this, a 7-day rail pass will not be enough to cover our train ride back to Narita airport on the last day. Any suggestions on whether I should just get regional passes? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi there,

A 7-day Japan Rail Pass will still be a very good option for you on this route, for day 1 to 7. As it will cover travel between all this cities, including the Shinkansen to Osaka and Kyoto and the Narita Express.

Then for the last day, you can buy a one way ticket, or use a slightly cheaper option like an express bus to Narita Airport.

Kind regards,
Daniel
