My husband and I are getting into Osaka on 3rd August this year. Do we need to purchase train passes before departing Australia? Is it better to get a one way train pass for now to get from airport to accommodation and then sort out the train passes when we are there?
We are spending 4 nights in Osaka and then wishing to move to another region for a week. Then 3 and final week in another region before departing from Osaka.
What's the before way of seeing most of Japan for 3 weeks? Should we buy the 5 days passes or are we better of buying regional passes to sight-see one region for a few days, same accommodation, before moving to another?

What's the best way of seeing Japan in 3 weeks without blowing out the budget? Arigato gozaimasu!

Hi there,

If you wish to purchase a JR Pass/most regional passes, you'll need to do so before you leave for Japan, as they cannot be purchased in Japan.

If you wish to use rail passes, I would suggest buying multiple short regional passes rather than the 21-day JR Pass as it is likely to come out to be less expensive for you.

Seeing the main parts of Japan in three weeks is definitely doable! I'd suggest seeing whatever you can in the Kansai-Hiroshima region - so Miyajima, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara. This is definitely doable in 1-2 weeks. I'd then suggest purchasing a 7-day Hokuriku Arch Pass, and going via the Hokuriku Arch to Tokyo, allowing you to see Kanazawa and Nagano in the process. If you want to see Fuji you can do so as a day trip from Tokyo and then can return to Osaka via the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Obviously 3 weeks in Japan will be somewhat costly, but this limits you to two Regional Passes, the Kansai-Hiroshima and Hokuriku Arch.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
