Hello,

We are a couple with 2 kids (5 and 3 yrs) and is planning to visit Japan in the upcoming Sakura season.

We need your advises on which regional pass we should buy for the following Iternary:

Option 1:
1/ March 25th: from Yao station (Osaka) to Nagoya, we expect arriving at noon the latest in order to take a bus to Nabana No Sato, then back to Nagoya in the evening.
2/ March 26th: Take a one day tour to shirakawa-go.
3/ March 27th: Visit Nagoya castle in the morning and take a train to Kyoto.
=> We have checked and supposedly that none of Passes are eligible and then we need to buy shinkansen ticket for this round trip (Osaka-Nagoya-Kyoto).

Option 2:
1/ March 25th: same as option 1.
2/ March 26th: from Nagoya to Takayama, then take a bus to Shirakawa-go and back to Takayama in the late afternoon.
3/ March 27th: Visit the old Takayama city and take a train to go back to Kyoto.
=> We are checking this JR regional pass (Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass) and it would be supposedly included all the transportation cost from above trip. It is obviously cost effective than option 1. The possible cons of this option would be having longer travel time/transit between many JR lines.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I will keep sharing my Itenary in Kyoto/Nara/Osaka/Kobe and look forward to your advise later on.

Regards,
David

Hi David,

I had a look at option 1 but was not really find a good pass for your trip. As you know, there's no regional pass that covers the Shinkansen Nagoya - Kyoto and this happens to be the most expensive one-way trip.

Option 2 with a Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass would work, it does include the bus to/from Shirakawa-go as well and would be a cost-efficient option. The downside (though arguably upside) is that you have to travel via Kanazawa to Kyoto and the Kansai Area. Kanazawa is a very nice city and worth a visit on its own, however it would likely mean changing your plans and not do Shirakawa-go as a day trip from Nagoya but more as a stop on the way to Kansai.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
