I'm sorry, this question has surely been asked 100 times before, but I couldn't just find an answer to it, so here I go:

I will spend 3 weeks in Japan with a friend in may,
we are landing in Tokyo, and thought we'd stay there for a week.
And then, during the other two weeks travel to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Naoshima, Hiroshima, Miyajima maybe Beppu and back to Tokyo.

Now we basically wanted to visit Hakone and the nearby from Tokyo, in this case we would probably be better off with a 21 day Railpass, right?

Or do we have to pay the subways in Tokyo seperately anyways and could it thus turn out being cheaper to only take the 14day railpass?

Thankyou so much for your help!

Aita

Hi Aita, no problem!

A 14 day may well be more suitable as both the trains around Hakone and the Tokyo metro are both run by non-JR companies you'll have to pay for these bit of travel even if you have a Japan Rail Pass. For Hakone, the only bit that a JR Pass would get you for free is the trip by bullet train down to Odawara at ¥7000 return (takes 30 mins). You could go even cheaper if you had the time via the Odakyu Romance Car from Shinjuku for ¥4000 return (takes 85 mins).

On the other hand, if you intended to go out to Nikko or Kamakura from Tokyo, and if you're coming in and out of Narita on the Narita Express, then it may well tip the scales in favour of getting a 21 day Rail Pass. Here's a similar question asked about the 7 or 14 day pass that covers these legs. You can see that if you went to these places too, it would be well worth picking up an extra 7 days on your rail pass.

By the way, once you arrive in the general area of Hakone, you'll definitely want to buy the Hakone free pass as the trains around Hakone are run by Odakyu, not JR.

Hope this helps!

Mari
