what is your recommendation on purchasing a JR rail pass for this above itinerary.

Hi Laurie,
The following parts are not:
1.) Kyoto - Katsura, Katsura is not a JR station. You can travel from Kyoto station to Nara using the JR Pass.
2.) Keisei Skyline, this is a private railway. You can use the Narita Express instead with the JR Pass.
A 7 day JR Pass would be a good option if you would return to Kyoto before it expires, otherwise I would go for normal rail tickets.
