Happy New Year. Dear JR expert,

I will land on Tokyo on March 1 for the 3 week trip. Tentatively, I plan to stay in Tokyo for (5 days) then, go down to Kyoto (5 days), Osaka (3 days), and Hiroshima (2 days), then, most importantly is to go to Koya-san (2-3 days) before going south to Fukuoka for Busan (S. Korea). I need to travel a lot. I am thinking buy a JR pass I have three questions:

  1. Which JR pass should I buy for cost and effectiveness?
  2. Are the dates on the pass in a consecutive sequence, i.e., Once it is initiated, the dates will be counted continuously till it expired (it is not used in a number of days)? If this is the case, should I buy a number of passes?
  3. Does JR pass include metro rides in a city or cities?

Thank you very much for your answers in advance. And look forward to your reply.

Hi Kit,

That's a wonderful trip!

1.) I think your best option is either normal tickets or a 14-day JR Pass.

2.) Yes, all passes are counted in consecutive periods.

3.) You can use local JR lines in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, these cover most parts of the city. Travel on the metro and other non-JR transport is not covered.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
