Thanks for all the guidance. Few more inputs needed as my travel and stay are firmed up now.
1. I will be landing at Kansai OSAKA domestic airport at 10/30pm. My hotel is 5mns walk from Shin-Osaka station. As i will be buying Green/Business class pass from JR pass, can i activate the same at 10/30 PM in the night and travel to Shin Osaka station? do we have direct trains at that hour? I and my wife will be having two big bags as we are on a 8 day trip. Your guidance will be highly appreciated
2. Day 2 we are travelling to Hiroshima - whether JR pass would be valid for local tram or bus travel?
3. Day 3 we intend to visit Kyoto - whether JR pass would be valid in local bus/train
4. Day 5 we would be reaching Odawara and want to travel to Hakone -whether JR pass would be valid from Odawara to Hakone

Regards...Suresha

Hi there,

1.) The Ticket office at Kansai Airport is open until 23:00. You should be able to make that if your flight arrives on time, as Kansai is very efficient. That said, the JR Pass is counted in days and this one trip would effectively count as a whole day. It may be more cost efficient to activate your JR Pass, depending on the rest of your trip. You can use the JR Airport rapid into Osaka.

2.) The JR Pass is valid on the local sightseeing bus in Hiroshima, local JR lines and the JR Ferry to Miyajima. The tram is not included.

3.) Local JR buses/trains are covered in Kyoto. Transport run by other companies, like the Kyoto metro is not.

4.) There is no JR transport possible within the Hakone area. You may want to look at using a Hakone Free Pass, to explore the Hakone area.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel San for your reply and it is very helpful. One item is left out.

Do i get train from Kansai to Shin Osaka at 10/30pm or 11pm? Are these direct trains? What frequency we have around this time?

Thanks in advance....Suresha

Many thanks for the guidance. I had a very interesting 8 days trip to Japan from Mar15 to Mar24. Arrived in Narita and took a flight to Osaka Kanzai. Had 3 days in Osaka and went to Hiroshima/Miyajima on 16th, Nara on 17th, Kyoto on 18th. Traveled to Mt.Fuji station on 19th from Shin Osaka and 21st from Mt.Fuji station to Shinjuku. On 22nd, made a day trip from Shinjuku to Kanazawa and left Narita on 24th morning. I found JR pass to be very convenient and efficient. Found about an hour's Q to exchange my bookings to JR pass at Narita airport. In every station, i found Rail staff very helpful and guided me to my train or platform. Never faced any issue with language or food(I am a vegetarian). Liked the helpful attitude of Japanese to tourists. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and already started planning for my next trip to Sapporo sometime towards end of this year. Thanks once again
