Dear experts, I will be going Japan next year which means JR pass prices would have risen.

Below is my expected itinerary, would like some advice on which pass to get. 11 nights stay in Nagoya, is it feasible to travel around with Shinkansen daily using Nagoya as base?

Day 1: Land in Nagoya
Day 2: Takayama
Day 3: Fuji at Kawaguchiko station
Day 4: Tokyo
Day 5: Osaka
Day 6: Kyoto
Day 7: Nara
Day 8: Kyoto or Osaka
Day 9: Kobe
Day 10: Mishima or any recommendation
Day 11: Nagoya

Appreciate, thanks.

Activating 7 day JR pass from day 3, will run out before day 10?

Hi there,

Nagoya is nicely in the middle, so you could easily travel around. Though you will be spending a good amount of time on the train too (not a bad thing if you enjoy scenic rides). Only Kawaguchiko is a bit hard to reach from Nagoya, so you may want to visit a different place easier to access, such as Atami or Shizuoka.

Activating 7 day JR pass from day 3, will run out before day 10? Yes, that is correct.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Thanks for insightful reply. I do like scenic views on trains.

I’m aware of the long trip to Kawaguchiko, from Navitime it seems possible to get back and forth within a day. Visiting during end of March, is the crowd manageable in this location or its completely not advisable given 4 hours of train ride?

It will probably be busy, but that will depend on the weather too.

A great alternative would be the Chureito Pagoda.

Thanks, two more questions.

For transfers, do i have to reach the next train station first before printing ticket for next train at the counter or machine? As Japan train system still use paper tickets.

What are the apps to reserve the seat for JR train beforehand?
