Hello,
We plan to purchase 3 tickets for the JR Pass an intend to travel from Osaka to Kyoto and back and also to Tokyo via the bullet train.
Will we need to make reservations to board the train or can we simply show up at the station an board as needed?

Both options are possible. I do recommend getting seats ahead of time, as it means you are secure of seating. However, if you prefer to travel at your own pace and hop on the train as you like, then that is an option too.
