Hi, its our first time to travel to japan this coming dec 26-30. Part of the itinerary made by my kids is a day trip to osaka on our third day for they really want to go to universal studio. Will it be practical to purchase a jr pass for whole of japan?

Hi there,
You certainly could! The cost of a 7-day JR Pass (at current pricing) is similar to a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto. Now, you get unlimited travel for the same price.
Do keep in mind that it is 3+ hours from Tokyo to Universal Studio, so you will want to get on an early train and possible a late one out.
