HI,
I will be travelling to Japan for NYE and I will be purchasing a 14 day JR pass. I have a friend who is an Australian resident working in Japan teaching English. He has a visa but is not a permanent resident. Am I able to buy him a JR pass before I come over as well, so he can use it while we travel around for a few weeks?

Hi Sam!
You can only use a Japan Rail Pass if you are on a Tourist visa ("Temporary Visitor" entry status) in Japan.
So any other Visa (Work, Student etc) is not eligible.
Sorry for the bad news :(
Hope you have a great time in Japan!
Daniel
