Is it possible to upgrade/downgrade your pass once you're in Japan?

Hi! I was just wondering if it's possible to switch which pass you have once you're already in Japan. For example, if you were to buy the 14 day pass, would it be possible to 'downgrade' to the 7 day pass and receive a partial refund? Or alternatively, if you had the 7 day pass, could you 'upgrade' to the 14 day pass by paying the difference?

Hi there,

I'm afraid it is not possible to upgrade your JR Pass once it has been issued. In addition, rail passes cannot be refunded once they are activated or exchanged in Japan.

If you are going for a period of time and are uncertain about your travel, a possible solution would be to purchase 2x7 day passes. If you do not use one you can return it to use for a partial refund as per our terms and conditions.

Hope this helps!
