We are a family of 4. One teenager and 3 adults. This is our first time in Japan and this is what we have so far:

June 5- Day 1-Arrive Tokyo
Day 2-Full day Tokyo
Day 3- Nikko day trip
Day 4- Travel to Osaka- Activate JR
Day 5- Osaka Full Day
Day 6 -Osaka Full Day
Day 7- Hiroshima/Miyajima Island travel to Okayama, stay overnight
Day 8-Naoshima, overnight Okayama
Day 9- Kyoto
Day 10- Nara Day Trip
Day 11- Kyoto June 16-
Day 12-Kyoto/Travel to Tokyo
Day 13- Tokyo Full day
Day 14- Tokyo Full day
Day 15 - Tokyo to Airport

Is this too much for these amount of days? Also, is Okayama a good base to stay to visit Hiroshima, Miyajima and Naoshima, or is there an easier way to do this and should we get a 14 day rail pass? Does it go to all these destinations?

Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

A 14 day JR Pass would be a very good fit for your travel plans and help you make great savings, compared to buying the rail tickets outright. I do suggest activating it on the day that you go to Nikko, as it can be a pricey trip without the JR Pass, especially when using the Shinkansen.

Okayama is a good base in that it has many good train connections and is central. The city itself, however, is not that interesting compared to say Hiroshima. If you like to wander around in the evening, then I think Hiroshima is a better fit. However, if you are looking for the convenience of train connection, then Okayama works out well.

The JR Pass will cover travel to all the cities you visit, the ferry to Naoshima is not included.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
