We are traveling to Japan in January 18. Getting very confused if a JR pass is the way to go for us as we will be stationary in Hakuba for 4 days. 14 day pass for 2 adults and 2 teenage children will cost $539 AUD each. I have tried to cost out the alternative individual trips and I think it works out cheaper to just buy as we go.
appreciate any advice.

Day 1 Narita Airport to Shinjuku (Ltd Exp Narita Express or bus )
Day 2 Shinjuku
Day 3 Shinjuku - Hakuba (Ltd Express Azusa)
Day 3 to 6 - Haukuba (No Travel)
Day 7Hakuba -Kyoto
Day 8 Kyoto
Day 9 Kyoto -Osaka
Day 10 - Universal Studios (No Travel)
Day 11 - Osaka and depart - Kansai Airport

Hi there,

Yes, you're calculations add up. I would also advise getting normal tickets.

A JAPAN Rail Pass would be great if you would have made a return to Tokyo after Osaka.

Enjoy Japan!

Hi again,

You would not do enough travel to make savings with the Osaka-Tokyo Hokuriku Arch Pass,

As there is only one Azusa per day going directly to Hakuba, I would make a reservation where possible.
