JR Pass for trip in 2024

I have booked a trip to Japan at the beginning of 2024, and I notice that some vendors (such as jrpass.com) do sell the Japan Rail Pass 6 months in advance. If it were possible to get a JR Pass now-ish and avoid the dramatic price hike in October would, but I have seen conflicting opinions online about whether this is possible (some say any pass bought before the price increase would not be honoured, for example).

Would it be possible to order a JR Pass 6 months in advance for activation/use in January?
